W W T D? — What Would Terry Do?

Then and Now

Twenty Million Years B.C.

It was the reign of the Dinosaurs. Their old friend Methane had helped them gain victory over their old enemy the Mammals.
Life was great for the Dinosaurs. Those pesky little Mammals. had been driven off by the Methane and now the Dinosaurs could live in peace. Well, relative peace that is. One still had to be careful not to be eaten by a Fellow-Dinosaur. But so long as one watched his or her back (or is that backs – it's hard to tell with all those fins and ridges), everything was fairly peaceful. And the more Methane one breathed, “Oh, scrumptious Methane, I can smell it now.”, the stronger one became. … Or so it seemed.

But life is never what it seems. Day by day my Fellow-Dinosaurs die. Some are eaten by larger Dinosaurs. I've been spared this fate as no one wants to eat a poet. “It's a nasty job, but somebody’s got to do it.” Others have succumbed to breathing too much Methane. Our old friend has increased in strength and become our enemy. One by one my Fellow-Dinosaurs die and I fear I shall soon be the last.
After the last of the Dinosaurs died, Methane left the air and seeped back into the ground. With Methane gone, the Mammals. came back, and life was like it was before the reign of the Dinosaurs, only better.

Two Thousand Years A.D.

It was the reign of the Dinosaurs – huge conglomerates that had no rivals. Their old friend Petroleum – a relative of Methane – had helped them gain victory over their old enemy the Wild Animals and their fans – the Environmentalists.

After the last of the Dinosaurs died, Petroleum by-products left the air and seeped back into the ground. With Petroleum gone, the Wild Animals and Environmentalists came back, and life was like it was before the reign of the Dinosaurs, only better.
