W W T D? — What Would Terry Do?

Clothes — Resources

Before we talk about resources for clothes, let’s talk about resources for what to do with the clothes once you get them.
First of all, you might need hangers to hang them on, if for no other reason than 100% cotton has a nasty habit of developing wrinkles. Both metal and wood hangers can be found at www.organize-everything.com – 800-600-9817. Alternatively, you can do like I did and beg for metal hangers at dry cleaners. Only one of the cleaners charged me for the hangers. If you wind up owning too many metal hangers, you can always use them to build your own UFO detector. See http://members.aol.com/CoolJ101/materials.html for more information.
Next, I suppose it would be nice to have something to hang the hangers on. For this I recommend garment racks from www.stacksandstacks.com – 877-278-2257.
For clothes which will store in a dresser, there aren’t many options for those with MCS. One option is to ask your neighborhood carpenter to make you one from a tree in your yard which you’ve watched grow for the last 30 years. There are some places which sell solid wood dressers. These are usually referred to as rustic dressers, run lots of money, and might be finished/sealed with something you can’t tolerate.
Another option is to ask your local welder to make you a metal dresser. Alternatively, you can go to your local office supply store and buy a metal storage cabinet. These can also be bought direct from the manufacturer at www.fillipmetal.com – 800-535-0733. Also, you can try to get a metal manufacturer, such as www.hoffmanmc.com to custom make you a metal dresser.

As for the clothes themselves, if you’re a woman and can afford it, very nice 100% organic cotton clothes can be purchased from Fisher Henney at www.fhnaturals.com – 800-343-6639. All the cotton in clothes from Patagonia is 100% organic. That’s not to say that the clothes might not also contain man-made fabrics, but it’s a start – www.patagonia.com – 800-638-6464.
For other huge selections, try www.gaiam.com – 877-989-6321; or www.abundantearth.com – 888-513-2784. The store we’re going to try next is www.feelinggoods.com – 877-349-2102. Not only do the customer testimonials they publish sound great, you also get a chance to win free socks. www.ahappyplanet.com – 888-946-4277 – has always been a good resource, even if their selection is smaller.
A word of caution when buying MCS safe clothes – don’t buy a lot the first time. Try two to three small purchases and check the customer service. Many stores which sell organic cotton or hemp clothes don’t know the first thing about quality clothes or quality service.
An excellent resource of 100% cotton clothing is www.janices.com – 800-JANICES. They do have some organic cotton clothes, but mostly the clothes are just 100% cotton. They also make custom clothes in case you have a special need. And mostly they just sell cloth which is handy if you want to make your own clothes.
For under garments, us guys are on our own. The gals on the other hand, have a couple great resources in www.cottonbras.com – 919-477-5669 and www.bluecanoe.com – 888-923-1373. When it comes to outer garments, the best I can suggest is cotton flannel shirts and several layers of them.

Australian Cow      The last time I bought a pair of leather shoes, the smell was so bad I almost had a cow! To alleviate this problem, next I’m going to try shoes from www.veganwares.com in Australia - 61+3+9417 0230. (And yes, that’s a picture of an Australian Cow – just kidding!)
